BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION TRAINING
Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFRT) involves performing strength training exercises while restricting blood flow to the working extremities. Restricting the blood flow using a medical-grade tourniquet (aka cuff) has been shown in scientific studies to be both safe and effective. A significant benefit of BFRT is building strength and muscle size while using light weights or resistance bands. The cuffs are tight enough to allow limited arterial blood flow into the limb but restrict venous flow out of the limb. The restriction of blood causes metabolites to accumulate. Metabolite accumulation tricks the body and the brain to think heavyweights are being used. For this reason, BFRT is a great strategy for those who can not lift heavy weights, like the elderly or those recuperating from an injury but still want the benefits of high-intensity training.
Dr. Le Cara is one of the leading clinicians and educators in BFR using the techniques often with his patients. He also teaches physical therapists, chiropractors and strength coach how to utilize BFR safely and effectively with their clients.
